A Pirates Life
Chapter 5

___________________________________________________________________________________________________
"What do you know about the Devil's Eye?" Arthur asked you in a serious tone. You blinked at him.
"The Devil's Eye?" You repeated. He nodded. "It's not ringing any bells…what is it?" you asked. In your mind's eye, you were picturing an actual eye, and hoped that that wasn't true. That would just be way too wired.
"Well you see, it's this diamond the size of a small melon." He held up his hands to show you the approximate size. "And legend has it that if you look into it the right way, you can see the future."
"Really?" You asked, you curiosity getting the better of you. It sounded a little farfetched, but you were intrigued none the less. He nodded. "How the hell did you hear about this?"
"You hear some things in pubs." Arthur said turning back to his desk. "One night we were docked in a port and I stopped by a pub for a drink. There was this drunken idiot there shouting about a magical jewel that could foretell the future. It was a notion I was unwilling to believe until he started waving this map around. A fight, very similar to the one you got me into today, broke out and I was able to nick the map. I guess you could say curiosity killed the cat. I wanted to know if this map was real, and upon inspecting it, I could tell it was. After you've seen a lot of maps, you get real good at sorting the fakes ones from the rest. The maps good and all, I know where the island that the cave the Devil's Eye is hidden in, but there's still one piece missing."
"What's that?" you asked taking a step closer to him your curiosity peaking.
"The artifact I'm tracking down, it's really a key stone. It's supposed to open up the cave the Devil's eye is hidden in. I'm not sure how it works. I guess we'll find out when we get there…if we get there. The key stone is proving rather difficult to find. Every lead I've got on it had just landed me in another bloody goose chase." He said rubbing the back of his head. You frowned.
"What's this 'key stone' supposed to look like?" You pressed him.
"It's really a small stone, said to be smooth and white with markings that match the ones on the map on it." Your eyes widened. It almost sounded like he was describing the pendant on your necklace. "I just don't know where… wait a second." He turned to you. "Could you come here for a second love?"
"Why?" you said. He stood up from his chair.
"Just come here, please." He said. Shocked by the fact that he actually said please, you went over to him. He cupped your face in his hand and pulled your face up to his. 'A kiss?! Is that all he wanted?!' You thought as he pressed his lips against yours. You were too distracted to notice that his other hand was dancing around your neck looking for the chord to your necklace. He found it and tugged it up reviling the pendant.
"Ah ha!" he said triumphantly looking down at the stone. "I saw this the other night. I don't know why it didn't register that this is the stone I've been looking for."
"Do you mind?" You said slapping his hand away and taking a step back. That was the second time he had used a kiss to distract you. Arthur looked at you for a long moment.
"Where did you get that (name)?" He asked you. You shrugged.
"My father gave it to me when I was eight. I don't know where he got it though." You said looking at the floor.
"Well I guess it doesn't matter where he got it, because it's here now. The last piece of the puzzle, finally." He held out his hand for your necklace. "May I?" You shook your head and held on to the pendant.
"If it's all the same to you Arthur, I'll hold onto it." You said. He frowned. "Well, apparently I'm not going anywhere for a while, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal if I hang on to it." Arthur was quiet for a moment.
"True." He said. "I'll trust you to keep it safe then." You rolled your eyes.
"There's something I don't get though." You said looking him full in the face.
"What's that love?" He asked cocking a bushy eye brow.
"As intriguing as this 'Devil's Eye' thing is, I don't see why Gilbert would want it. I didn't even know he was capable of stealing something from anyone. He's a merchant for crying out loud!" You said. Arthur chuckled.
"Is that what he told you?" He asked.
"Yes it is!" You snapped. "What? Do you know something about him that I don't? He's my friend…well more like my brother. Why would he lie to me?"
"He's no merchant. He's a pirate, and a bloody thorn in my side. He and his git goons, Francis and Antonio, are always messing things up." He said darkly. You stared at him in disbelief. 'No…Gilbert wouldn't lie about being a pirate…would he?' You thought, but then again he never did tell you what he was up to while he was sailing around. And the fact that he had been named captain of a ship so soon after he left had always seemed fishy to you.
"Why would he lie about something like this?" You said quietly. You felt hurt. The one person you trusted more than anyone in the world had betrayed you. Your head was spinning. "Oh I'm gonna have some words with him, if I see him again…not sure I want to now…" You walked over to the window and looked out across the dock. There was silence between you and Arthur for a long moment.
"How did you end up living with him?" Arthur asked curiously. You sighed. You didn't like digging up your past, but for some reason it just slipped out of you now.
"My father died at sea shortly after he gave me this necklace. The shock of losing him killed my mum, leaving me alone. I was only eight, and couldn't really take care of myself. Gilbert and I were really good friends, and he convinced his family to take me in. That's how I ended up living with him. I trusted him…I never thought that he would hide something like that from me." You said still looking out the window.
"Some people just don't understand the value of trust." Arthur said quietly.
"Yeah something like that." You scoffed. Arthur yawned and stretched.
"It's late love. We should get some sleep." You hadn't noticed before he said anything, but you were really tired. You nodded and went to climb into bed, but Arthur caught your arm.
"What?" You asked him annoyed. You really wanted to go sleep.
"You're not sleeping in cloths like that." He said. You glanced down at you cloths. You were covered in dirt from the floor of the cell you had been laying on earlier. You put your hands on your hips.
"Well you're the one who threw me in that cell, so it's your fault that I'm covered in dirt. How do you propose we fix this situation?" you snapped.
"I could lend you another shirt, or" He said with a glint in his eyes, "you could sleep naked." You felt your face flush.
"Hmm let's see: sleep naked and have a repeat of the other night. I don't think so." You said. Arthur snaked his arm around your waist and pulled you closer to him.
"You can't tell me you didn't enjoy it." He said in your ear. His hot breath on your skin sent a shiver down your spine.
"I-I umm-" You started to say but were cut off by his lips against yours again. He pulled away leaving you in a sort of daze.
"I'll get you a shirt then." He said quietly letting go of you. You were glad that he opted on letting you borrow one of his shirts. He dug through a chest at the foot of the bed and towed a shirt to you. "Here you go love."
"T-thanks…" You mumbled. You turned away from him to change. Arthur pulled off his shirt and kicked off his boots. He crawled into bed and watched you as you neatly put your cloths in a corner with your boots. You sat down to the bed keeping your back to him when you felt his strong arms wrap around you pulling you to him so that your head was resting against his bare chest. You had to admit, it felt really warm and comfortable in his arms. You snuggled a little closer to him and closed your eyes.
"Goodnight love." He said kissing your fore head.
"Yeah, whatever. Goodnight." You mumbled. He chuckled and pulled the covers over both of you, and drifted off to sleep.
Chapter 5! Woot! I was going to post this last night...but I fell asleep on my laptop. Quite literally on the keyboard. I woke up to pages and pages of random letters. Go me...

Anyway, I hope you're enjoying this, and as always thanks for reading. And the plot thickens...at least a little bit.
